A member of the Democratic Party, Psaki was previously the White House deputy secretary (2009), White House deputy communication director (2009-2011) as well as spokesperson for the United States Department of State 2013-2015 and White House communications Director (2015-2017). Psaki contributed to CNN's political coverage of 2017 to 2020. Psaki started her career in 2001 as an influential political contributor to CNN. She worked on the elections for the re-elections of Tom Harkin (Iowa Democrats) for the U.S. Senate, and Tom Vilsack (Iowa Governor). Psaki was later appointed as the press secretary's assistant in John Kerry's campaign for president in 2004. Psaki was communications director of Joseph Crowley, a U.S. Representative, as well as the regional press secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 2005 to 2006. In 2012, Psaki returned to political communications as the press secretary for Obama's reelection campaign for 2012. 20 February, 2013, Psaki was appointed spokesperson for the United States Department of State. Her appointment in the Department of State fueled speculation that she could replace White House Press Secretary Jay Carney after he left the White House. However on May 30, 2014 it was announced that Josh Earnest would replace Carney. In the year 2015, she returned to the White House as communications director and stayed through the end of the Obama administration.
